Mini Fabric Scrap Weavings

overview

construct a simple loom from corrugated cardboard and yarn.

round up your fabric scraps, random ribbons, yarn remnants and even spare shoelaces (!) to weave into these colorful and whimsical textile works of art!

maker checklist

bit of cardboard (8x10in to 10x14in)
small ball of yarn or warp thread
ruler and pencil
scissors and tape
scraps of fabric, yarn, ribbon, etc!
embroidery needle (helps!)
dowel for hanging

construct your loom

measure across the short sides of a rectangle of sturdy cardboard, marking every 1/4in.

snip short cuts (also about 1/4in) at each mark. tape just below the cut line for reinforcement.

tape the end of a long length of yarn or warp thread to the back of the loom. starting at one edge…

wrap the thread from the back, through the first notch, down the front, and around the next notch.

repeat!

work your way across all notches until the loom is warped. tape at the back.

make your weaving

plan your weaving by laying the fabrics and yarns across the loom in a design that you like.

tip!

the pieces need to be about twice as wide as your loom (or more).

weave! working from one side to the other, weave each strip under and over your warp yarn. leave the ends long on either side, it adds to the fun!

tip!

leave plenty of space at the top and bottom so that you have enough room to tie-off the warp threads.

finish the weaving by snipping the warp thread at the longest point (the edge of the cardboard). tie neighborhing threads together and tuck the ends into the back of the weaving using an embroidery needle.

hang on a dowel to display!
