hands-on project

Let's make it.

01

cut magazine pages or colorful paper into 2-inch strips.

cut lots of paper strips to start. a paper cuter or X-acto knife makes this a snap. but don’t worry! scissors and a (relatively!) straight line are perfectly fine.

02

fold the long edge of each strip to the center, so you have a very long skinny envelope.

03

repeat lots and lots of times until you have a nice pile of folded papers.

04

link two strips together by sliding the end of one strip into the other and taping into place (inside) with double-stick tape.

05

link a few more strips until you have enough to start winding up.

06

roll the folded strip into a tight spiral. leave a few inches unwound, so you can insert and link the next strip.

07

continue linking and winding, around and around and around. eventually you’ll have a nice round disk!

08

tape the end of the final strip in place securely

09

press down on the center, and pull up the outer layers, and gently coax your coil into a bowl shape.

watermelon lip scrub

a sugary lip scrub with summer flavor! this recipe makes enough for 2 mini mason jars. one of our favorite parts of the project was hunting for just the right little pots for our scrub.
