any box top will do… it’s the maze that takes time to design. make a small maze for a marble or a large one for a ping-pong ball!

maker checklist

  • box top or bottom (2in high)
  • paper straws
  • pencil, scissors, glue
  • ping pong ball, *or marble

instructions

line a box with felt. decorate it too!

cut paper straws to all different lengths.

plan your maze by placing straws on the felt. add dead ends and passageways.

glue the straws into place carefully.

add a start and a finish. then drop in a ping pong ball (or marble), and give it a go!

how it works!

friction is a force! it’s the force that resists motion when the surface of one object meets the surface of another object. the ball is round and smooth, and it wants to roll. the felt adds more friction than paper and helps keep the ball under control.
